Quote of the Day
With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person which almost went unnoticed last week. Larry La Prise, the man who wrote "The Hokey Pokey," died peacefully at age 93. The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in, and then the trouble started.

Border Security, good. Temporary Guest workers, I am still not so sure about that. Quick Thoughts
* Ground Hog Day, in fact - even the thought of it, is pretty inane. And FWIW, we have "6 more weeks of winter" coming. Shocker; given that it is all of 20 degrees outside now.
* More importantly - the State of the Union is tonight (in 30 minutes)!
* Although it pains me to give Clinton any credit for anything, aside from gratuitously abusing the office we (not me) elected him to, as a fiscal conservative I have to give a shout-out because 6 years ago (1998) he submitted a balanced federal budget for the first time in the US in 29 years. Not saying it was a good budget, but atleast it was balanced :).

Quick Thoughts
* Looks like the Iraqi Election turnout has been revised down to ~60%, still a resounding success considering what they were facing (some walking 13 miles to get to a polling center) ... Our prayers to the 44 Iraqis killed for trying to vote. It embarrasses me that here in the US we can barely scrape 60% of the voters out to the polls, amazing what we all take for granted. Iraqi Vote Day
* Voter turnout 70+% ... with all of the threats, and the (only) dozens of attacks, they still manage to have a higher turnout (percentage-wise) than the US has EVER had (our best was 63% in 1960). Some precincts hit 95% turnout! Major win for Iraq, for Freedom, and for the US/Bush. Big lose for the terrorists/insurgents, Kerry, Dean, the rest of the Democrat-pessimists, France/Germany/Russia ... and all of the dictatorships surrounding Iraq.
* FOXNEWS had a special wherein Shep Smith walked through one of Saddam's palaces. The above ground part was estimated to have cost $1B dollars. Oh, and the MILES of tunnels, bunkers, decontamination chambers, food storage, etc. beneath it dwarfs that $1B cost. All of this was built after the First Persian Gulf War ... while sanctions were imposed. You can thank the UN's Oil for Food fiasco (and Kofi, and Kojo) for this happening while people in Iraq were starving (or being executed).
* Weather : pummeling the South-East; 80k still without power. Here in VA we got some snow and some ice, and some incompetent drivers causing accidents. Bus crashes into parked tractor-trailer in New York, kills several. Condolences to all of those lost, and prayers for the injured!

Click for 'Israpundit Blogburst-Remembering the Wannsee Conference and the Liberation of Auschwitz'

Quick Thoughts
* 60 years ago today the Auschwitz Death Camp was taken by Soviet troops; please observe a moment of silence and reflection. Some details on the memorials taking place ... and Complete Blogburst-Remembering the Wannsee Conference and the Liberation of Auschwitz, via Cao ... a portion of which:
Remembering the Wannsee Conference and the Liberation of Auschwitz
* This article is posted by participants of the January 27, 2005, Blogburst to remember the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp, sixty years ago, on January 27, 1945.
* On January 20th, we marked the anniversary of the 1942 Wannsee Conference. In the course of that Conference, the Nazi hierarchy formalized the plan to annihilate the Jewish people. Understanding the horrors of Auschwitz requires that one be aware of the premeditated mass-murder that was presented at Wannsee.
* Highlighting these events now has become particularly important, even as the press reports that '45% of Britons have never heard of Auschwitz' (Jerusalem Post, December 2, 2004)
* The Holocaust, symbolized by Auschwitz, the worst of the death camps, occurred in the wake of consistent, systematic, unrelenting anti-Jewish propaganda campaign. As a result, the elimination of the Jews from German society was accepted as axiomatic, leaving open only two questions: when and how.
* As Germany expanded its domination and occupation of Austria, Czechoslovakia, France, the Low Countries, Yugoslavia, Poland, parts of the USSR, Greece, Romania, Hungary, Italy and others countries, the way was open for Hitler to realize his well-publicized plan of destroying the Jewish people.
* After experimentation, the use of Zyklon B on unsuspecting victim was adopted by the Nazis as the means of choice, and Auschwitz was selected as the main factory of death (more accurately, one should refer to the “Auschwitz-Birkenau complex”). The green light for mass annihilation was given at the Wannsee Conference, January 20, 1942, and the mass gassings took place in Auschwitz between 1942 and the end of 1944, when the Nazis retreated before the advancing Red Army. Jews were transported to Auschwitz from all over Nazi-occupied or Nazi-dominated Europe and most were slaughtered in Auschwitz upon arrival, sometimes as many as 12,000 in one day. Some victims were selected for slave labor or “medical” experimentation. All were subject to brutal treatment.
* In all, between three and four million people, mostly Jews, but also Poles and Red Army POWs, were slaughtered in Auschwitz alone (though some authors put the number at 1.3 million). Other death camps were located at Sobibor, Chelmno, Belzec (Belzek), Majdanek and Treblinka.
* Auschwitz was liberated by the Red Army on 27 January 1945, sixty years ago, after most of the prisoners were forced into a Death March westwards. The Red Army found in Auschwitz about 7,600 survivors, but not all could be saved.
* For a long time, the Allies were well aware of the mass murder, but deliberately refused to bomb the camp or the railways leading to it. Ironically, during the Polish uprising, the Allies had no hesitation in flying aid to Warsaw, sometimes flying right over Auschwitz.
* There are troubling parallels between the systematic vilification of Jews before the Holocaust and the current vilification of the Jewish people and Israel. Suffice it to note the annual flood of anti-Israel resolutions at the UN; or the public opinion polls taken in Europe, which single out Israel as a danger to world peace; or the divestment campaigns being waged in the US against Israel; or the attempts to delegitimize Israel’s very existence. The complicity of the Allies in WW II is mirrored by the support the PLO has been receiving from Europe, China and Russia to this very day.
* If remembering Auschwitz should teach us anything, it is that we must all support Israel and the Jewish people against the vilification and the complicity we are witnessing, knowing where it inevitably leads.

He is (and should be!) getting charged with 10(+?) counts of murder. Dumb enough to seriously try to commit suicide, and then even dumber to kill others (while failing to kill himself). Despicable. Inconsiderate. Update : FOX is reporting 11 dead so far, more expected ...
* Iraq: 1 US Marine, and 6 Iraqis, killed in polling location bombing ... condolences for all of them (and for the 30 Marines & 1 Sailor killed yesterday!) ... and major polling center attacks

<font color="#800000">5MPH?</font> 5MPH?

Important!
* University of Oregon BANS Support Of The Troops ... read the article, react accordingly ... and Malkin adds a thought or two, and a pic worth seeing ... and everyone should say "Thanks!" to our troops!

Quick Thoughts
* To the Acura that was driving 5MPH today - learn to drive, or stay home! Yes, the residential roads were not perfectly clear BUT IF YOU CAN'T GET UP TO A SPEED THAT EXISTS ON MY SPEEDOMETER YOU DON'T BELONG ON THE ROAD! </rant>
* A quick Thank You to al-Zarqawi for telling the world that al-Qaida doesn't just hate the US - they hate freedom, democracy, and everyone who supports them (and "participants in the upcoming election are enemies of Islam"). He's like a recruiting officer for the militaries of the right-thinking nations of the world!
* Congrats to the Patriots and the Eagles ... heading to the 'Bowl! (My Redskins, sadly, will only be going if they buy a ticket :( )
* Anyone have any experience, good or bad, with the VPEP 529 program? I am getting ready to sign up for Riley and would appreciate any input ... ?
* While I am blegging for info : anyone recommend a good brand/model of tires for, say, a Jeep Wrangler? Looking for something ~33" ... keeping in mind that I (obviously) want something reasonably capable off-road, but also that I commute ~60 miles a day so they have to do well on asphalt as well! (I currently have the stock rims, so can't go toooo wide either!)
* A quick shout out to our DC-Metro weatherpeople; thanks for getting everything 100% wrong, thank you for building up the hype/excitement/fear for no reason whatsoever, and thank you for also getting it wrong by MISSING THE (admittedly light) SNOW WE ARE GETTING NOW. You guys are great. Seriously, you deserver a HUGE (negative) RAISE!

* A few thoughts on the upcoming Iraqi elections ... "It doesn't matter to the liberal-socialists if Iraq elections are, in essence, successful; they will never admit it. The liberal-socialists will find some fault with the election to claim them illegitimate. Because if they don't, to admit elections were successful would be to give a victory to George Bush, and that is something they cannot allow. They would much rather have the U.S., the Iraqis, free elections, democracy, and freedom fail than to give credit to George Bush, and for that, they are pathetic."
* Court OKs Dog Sniff During Traffic Stop ... excellent! Found via CHT!
* Terri's Law Tossed ... "right to die" in question ... FWIW I agree with the "right to die"; however I don't believe her husband should be allowed to proceed. What is a South Park Conservative What is a South Park Conservative

Copied verbatim from a post at SPC by Ritchie:

A SPC is a fiscal conservative: the money I earn is mine. I understand the need for taxation to provide for the cops, firemen, military, and schools, but my taxes should not be used to pay for other people's mistakes and laziness, etc. God forbid that someone should have to take responsibility for their own welfare through hard work.....

A SPC is a social moderate and not a prude. If someone wants to be gay, then that is their business, but I don't want to see all these shirtlifters on their Gay Pride parades. You can get it on with the Goodyear Blimp if you want to, as long as you do it in the privacy of your own hangar.

They don't care if people listen to punk rock, heavy metal, Sam Kinison and Andrew Dice Clay, watch porn, play Grand Theft Auto, but think it shouldn't be exposed to people who might find such a thing offensive and unsuitable such as 8 year olds. They think if someone of an adult age and is exposed to such material, it isn't going to corrupt them and push them into worshipping Satan or turn them into a sexual pervert.

If you want to smoke pot and do drugs you can, but I don't think that I should pay for the rehabilitation of some druggie who has gone to rehab 15 times and can't kick the habit.

If you want an abortion, you can have one and as a last resort, but my tax dollars are going to fund your abortion. You breed it, you feed it, and not with endless welfare handouts from my taxes.

If you don't have to go to church to be a good upstanding person, and you don't care if people go to church; indeed, you welcome people having the right to worship at the place of their choice. You don't care if people wear religious symbols, but oppose religious fundamentalism and those who seek to impose religion in the public sphere.

Supports the military, cops, and firefighters. They are the ones who allow this country to survive.

Well, a few ideas. To sum up, people are big enough to make their own decisions and should take care of themselves, and should have every opportunity to forge their own path through hard work and self reliance without hurting anybody but themselves. If you can't be bothered to work, then you don't deserve my pity as you have every opportunity to succeed in the United States through hard work. I think Sam Kinison said it best: 'If you can't get it together in America, where else do you expect to make it work and make a life for yourself?'

... for the most part, I agree and fit that description (except that I am against abortion; and a touch more religion would do this country well ...)

* Interesting - on MLK day I have seen not a single article on any of the big MSM sites that mentions this fact, let alone actually discussing his life, his accomplishments, etc. Regardless, we should all take a moment to reflect on this great man, and see if we have in within ourselves to accomplish great things as he did. Quote of the Day
"Today, Social Security is sound, but a demographic crisis is looming. By 2030, there will be twice as many elderly as there are today, with only two people working for every person drawing Social Security. After 2032, contributions from payroll taxes will only cover 75 cents on the dollar of current benefits. So we must act, and act now, to save Social Security." (emphasis added)
-- President William Jefferson Clinton, 1998

In an email (claiming to be) from Robert Redford said:
(Note - it was sent to a friend of a family member, certainly not me! ... and the message is available here.

I will comment at the end ...

Dear NRDC BioGems Defender,
No one voted on Election Day to destroy the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. But President Bush is now claiming a mandate to do exactly that. Congressional leaders are pushing for a quick vote that would turn America's greatest sanctuary for Arctic wildlife into a vast, polluted oil field.
Even worse, they are planning to avoid public debate on this devastating measure by hiding it in a must-pass budget bill.
Please go to http://www.savebiogems.org/arctic/takeaction.asp?ms=RR0501 right now and send a message telling your U.S. senators and representative to reject this sneak attack on the Arctic Refuge.
And please forward my message to your friends, family and colleagues. We must mobilize millions of Americans in opposition as quickly as possible.
Don't believe for a second that the president is targeting the Arctic Refuge for the sake of America's energy security or to lower gas prices at the pump.
President Bush knows full well that oil drilled in the Arctic Refuge would take ten years to get to market and would never equal more than a paltry one or two percent of our nation's daily consumption. Simply put, sacrificing the crown jewel of our wildlife heritage would do nothing to reduce gas prices or break our addiction to Persian Gulf oil.
But if the raid on the Arctic Refuge isn't really about gas prices or energy security, then what is it about? It's the symbolism.
The Arctic Refuge represents everything spectacular and everything endangered about America's natural heritage. It embodies a million years of ecological serenity ... a vast stretch of pristine wilderness ... an irreplaceable birthing ground for polar bears, caribou and white wolves.
It is the greatest living reminder that conserving nature in its wild state is a core American value. It stands for every remnant of wilderness that we, as a people, have wisely chosen to protect from the relentless march of bulldozers, chain saws and oil rigs. And that's why the Bush administration is dead set on destroying it.
By unlocking the Arctic Refuge, they hope to open the door for oil, gas and coal giants to invade our last and best wild places: our western canyon lands, our ancient forests, our coastal waters, even our national monuments.
This is the real agenda behind the raid on the Arctic Refuge and the entire Bush-Cheney energy plan: to transfer our public estate into corporate hands so it can be liquidated for a quick buck.
House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) admitted as much when he said this battle over the Arctic Refuge is really a fight over whether energy exploration will be allowed in similarly sensitive areas in the future. "It's about precedent," Rep. DeLay said.
I take him at his word. If we let the president and Congress plunder the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for the sake of oil company profits, then no piece of our natural heritage will be safe from wholesale destruction.
Please go to http://www.savebiogems.org/arctic/takeaction.asp?ms=RR0501 and tell your senators and representative they have no mandate to destroy the Arctic Refuge. Then please be sure to forward this message to as many people as you can.

And thank you for speaking out at this critical time.
Sincerely,
Robert Redford

* First - Obviously, I encourage everyone to go to contact Congress in support of drilling in the ANWR. Any resource we have within our borders should be used for the improvement of our nation. Yes, some care should be taken to limit any environmental damage the the surrounding area - but prohibiting all access just makes no sense!
* Second - If there were easy reasons to justify not doing so, would the NRDC need to resort to lies / intentionally misleading statements ("vast, polluted oil field", "sneak attack", "Don't believe for a second").
* Third - "to transfer our public estate" ... whoops, wait right there. Exactly right. Our public estate. Let's put it to work for our public!

Quick Thoughts
* As I briefly mentioned yesterday - 99.1 HFS, as we knew it previously, died @ 10am (not noon) yesterday. Instead of being the DC-metro area's 'alternative rock' station it is now a Spanish-language music station. From CQ, January 12th is World Relief Day

<font color="#800000">Title, we don't need no stinking title</font> Title, we don't need no stinking title

Quick Thoughts
* While I can agree, in general, that having HAZMAT cargo going through your neighborhood is not desirable, DC Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton's pushes to have all HAZMAT trains diverted is a bit too much unless/until the same is taken into consideration for all residential areas. Since this is not quite feasible, and wouldn't address all of the related concerns, I think the best solution is to ensure that the cargo containers are properly constructed and maintained. That would probably be just a bit cheaper than re-routing all HAZMAT trains around ALL residential / populous areas, no?

"Instead of relying on disinterested, qualified document experts, Rather and Mapes (grateful for Col. Hackworth's invaluable assistance in her acclaimed Abu Ghraib expose, no doubt) ignore the complete worthlessness of Hackworth's "expertise" and crusade to include his ill-informed, inflammatory interview in their hit piece on Bush" ... and from Patterico : "Here's a Recommendation for You: Report the Truth"; while CQ has a lot to say as well ... and you can read CBS's whole report(PDF) here
