Babysitting Babysitting

Quick Thoughts
* I find myself babysitting my beautiful 8m old daughter (pic at the end of today's post :) ) this morning - and let me take just a few seconds to say that as I sit here holding her, with her holding her morning bottle (of breast milk), that fatherhood is truly amazing ... actually, now she is asleep in Daddy's lap. Watching her grow, develop her personality, and reach milestones (she crawled for the first time on the 22nd) is the best experience in the world. Knowing that I helped make such a precious thing, and that this tiny, little person is totally dependent on us (my wife & I) really changes your perspective.

* More truth on Social inSecurity ... "the trust fund "assets" total nearly $1.7 trillion in Treasury IOUs. Having already spent the money, the government in effect owes this debt to itself. Thus, to redeem these bonds, the government will have only four options: raise taxes; reduce Social Security benefits; reduce spending elsewhere; or borrow on the world market."
* More on LokiTorrent abusing the trust people put in it ... they don't even fight, handing the MPAA a victory, $1M, and all of the data on his servers ... regardless of the fact that he could have (probably) won the court case if he had a spine
* Battlestar Galactica, episode 1 (33) - available online, free, commercial free, plus deleted scenes!
* WRT Bush - "In Reagan's Footsteps "? ... even 'Der Spiegel' (leftish German newsweekly, which two years ago devoted an entire cover story to advancing the "Blood for Oil" thesis about U.S. ambitions in the Middle East) is now asking "Could Bush Be Right"? (the answer, BTW, is "YES!" :) )

Important Quote of the Day
"It's strange for me to say it, but this process of change has started because of the American invasion of Iraq ... I was cynical about Iraq. But when I saw the Iraqi people voting three weeks ago, 8 million of them, it was the start of a new Arab world... The Syrian people, the Egyptian people, all say that something is changing. The Berlin Wall has fallen. We can see it."

Who the Hell Do I Think I Am? Who the Hell Do I Think I Am?

My Response to imao's question - "Who the Hell Do I Think I Am." (This is an example of a meme :) )

1. Who the hell do you think you are?
I am Timmmaaaayyyy! Or TJ. A 30yr old, half-alcoholic, college drop-out ... although I gave up alcohol for lent, and am making plans to return to college. I have a beautiful wife & amazing 7m old daughter, and two German Shepherds. I drive a jacked-up Jeep Wrangler, which (sadly) spends all of its time on pavement. I am a United Methodist (Christian), and very Conservative.

2. So, other than blogging, what's your job? Do you work at some fast food joint, dumba**?
Network Design & Support, Information Security.

3. Do you have like any experience in journalism, idiot?
Proud to say, NO.

4. Do you even read newspapers?
Rarely, sometimes I read their sites though!

5. Do you watch any other news than FOX News propaganda, you ignorant fool?
Not often, although I don't get to watch FOXNEWS very often ... those of us who have jobs can't watch lots of TV ...

6. I bet you're some moron talk radio listener too, huh?
Nope, I drive into work at 5am - not much talk radio going on then ... so I listen to CDs - currently George Thoroughgood. In the past I have spent lots of time listening to Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson (my favorite band / artist) as well.

7. So, do you get a fax from the GOP each day for what to say, you @#$% Republican parrot?
Faxes are for old people! And red lights are for cops! (sorry, inside joke)

8. Why do you and your blogger friends want to silence and fire everyone who disagrees with you, fascist?
I want people to speak their mind, but I want them to be well informed when they do so.

9. Are you completely ignorant of other countries, or do you actually own a passport?
No, and No.

10. Have you even been to another country, you dumb hick?
Yes, as long as they don't (didn't) require a passport (e.g. - Canada, Jamaica).

11. If you're so keen on the war, why haven't you signed up, chickenhawk?
I am too old, and I can serve the country better in other ways. If it came down to it I would not hesitate to volunteer.

12. Do you have any idea of the horrors of war? Have you ever reached into a pile of goo that was your best friend's face?
Yes, but not from personal experience ... and no. Oh, does CounterStrike or REDvsBLUE count??

13. Have you ever reached into any pile of goo?
Yes, but not by choice. And does picking up after my German Shepherd Dogs counts ...

14. Once again, who the hell do you think you are?!
I am someone who was sickened by what I was seeing in the mainstream media during the last ~1.5 years of Bush's first term, and part of the process of becoming more informed included posting what I find ... mostly for my future reference (that was the original purpose of my blogging effort - organizing information / resources), but made available for all to share. And indexed by search engines, to boot!

Save Terri Save Terri

SUBJ : Terri Schiavo

Good morning, best wishes to all of you.

I am writing you this morning, as I am sure many others are, to ask that
each of you do everything within your power to prevent Terri Schiavo from
being murdered.

Let me say, that I support the 'right to die' for those who have proclaimed
their decision and meet a very specific list of criteria. Terri fulfills
neither of those criteria. Additionally, in Terri's case, under her
circumstances, this would not be mercy. Rather, it would be outright
murder. This decision was not reached lightly, and there are many resources
I have poured through to reach this conclusion.

To summarize - I support legislative, judicial and executive efforts that
will stop the forced starvation of Terri Schiavo.

Sincerely,

Colitis Colitis

Quick Thoughts
* So, late Saturday night my stomach started hurting. Kinda bad, but I thought I would live. Sunday, early afternoon, the pain started getting worse .. oh, and i started vomiting. After a few hours of this I decided to take a little trip to the local emergency room. After almost no wait to get triaged, a noticeable wait to see a doctor (it felt like forever!), I finally got some IV morphine & anti-nausea stuff. Felt much better, got some sleep, etc. Early (~1am?) Monday morning I got rolled over to the CT department, and that went just fine - aside from an exit-only part of my body being used as an entrance for a plastic tube & a small amount of Barium, that is. In the end (no pun intended), my appendix was just fine (I was afraid that would be the source of the problem - a friend of mine just went through that not too long ago (Hi Mike!)) and it was 'just' some Colitis. Whatever you call it, it hurt like hell. So I am home now, and feeling mostly all better ... that may be due to the Percoset, Cipro, and Flagyl ... and I am stuck on a bland diet for a day or four. Anyway - that is my excuse for not posting on Sunday, or earlier today. :)
* And, a Happy President's Day to everyone ... especially to George Bush :). Oh, and to Jimmy carter, who (amusingly enough) has a nuclear attack submarine named after him now.

Cute Kid jokes Cute Kid jokes

A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales. The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small. The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale. Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible. The little girl said, "When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah". The teacher asked, " What if Jonah went to hell?" The little girl replied, "Then you ask him".

A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She would occasionally walk around to see each child's work. As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. The girl replied, "I'm drawing God." The teacher paused and said, "But no one knows what God looks like." Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, "They will in a minute."

A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to "honor" thy Father and thy Mother, she asked, "Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?" Without missing a beat one little boy (the oldest of a family) answered, "Thou shall not kill."

One day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast on her brunette head. She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, "Why are some of your hairs white, Mom?" Her mother replied, "Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white." The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said, "Momma, how come ALL of grandma's hairs are white?"

The children had all been photographed, and the teacher was trying to persuade them each to buy a copy of the group picture. "Just think how nice it will be to look at it when you are all grown up and say,'There's Jennifer, she's a lawyer,' or 'That's Michael, He's a doctor.' A small voice at the back of the room rang out, "And there's the teacher, She's dead."

A teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of the blood. Trying to make the matter clearer, she said, "Now, class, if I stood on my head, the blood, as you know, would run into it, and I would turn red in the face.." "Yes," the class said. "Then why is it that while I am standing upright in the ordinary position the blood doesn't run into my feet?" A little fellow shouted, "Cause your feet ain't empty."

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and! posted on the apple tray: "Take only ONE. God is watching."Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples."

... thanks Aaron!

* A quick (cough) THANK you to the VDOT project team that decided not to finish the construction on I-495 on time (all lanes were too be opened NLT 05:00), causing serious backups before 05:30AM as all traffic from the other side of 495, I95, and I395 that wanted to get to Tyson's had to loop through Edsall Rd. Good Move, guys. Oh, and the people involved in the (atleast one)accident this caused probably have a word or two for you.

Happy Valentine's Day Happy Valentine's Day

Quick Thoughts
* Why must we celebrate these manufactured ("Hallmark") Holidays? Specifically for Valentine's Day - shouldn't tell our significant others how much we love them every day? Why do we need a 'special day' in order to do so? I think it is all an evil plot to give women an excuse to be mad at men; they know that in some way or other we will mess something up. For example, I failed to remember it was Valentine's Day as I was leaving the house this morning ... so although I kissed my mostly-asleep wife goodbye, I didn't mention what day it was. She will probably tag me for that. I should get a pass on account of it was too early ... brains just don't work right before 5am. Oh - and its not like I forgot about Valentine's Day altogether ... that is all squared away. Now, on to the 'important stuff' ...

communication is important, I question the suggestion
that any conversation of substance or necessity takes
place at 5am.

2. Eating: Now, you know I love a good meal and,
though cooking is far from my specialty, why you
suggested that I eat a kebab with chili sauce, coupled
with pot noodles and some stale crisps (washed down
with chocolate nesquik and topped off a Kit Kat) is
beyond me. Eclectic eater I am, but I think you went
too far this time.

3. Clumsiness: Unless you're subtly trying to tell me
that I need to do more yoga to improve my balance, I
see NO need to hammer the issue home by causing me to
fall down the stairs. Completely unnecessary.
Similarly, it should never take me more than 30
seconds to get the front door key into the lock.

4. Pictures: This can be a blessing in disguise, as it
can often clarify the last point below, but the
following costumes are heretofore banned from being
placed on my head in public: indian wigs, sombreros,
bows, ties, boxes, upside-down cups, inflatable
balloon animals, traffic cones, bras.

5. Beer Goggles: If I think I may know him/her from
somewhere, I most likely do not. Please do not request
that I go over and see if in fact, I do actually know
that person. The phrase 'let's shag' is heretofore to
be rendered illegal. While I may be thinking this,
please reinstate the brain-to-mouth block that would
stop this thought from becoming a statement,
especially in public.

Furthermore, the hangovers have GOT to stop. Now, I
know a little penance for our previous evenings
debauchery may be in order, but the 2pm Hangover
Immobility is ccompletely unacceptable. I ask that, if
the proper steps are proactively taken on my part
(water, vitamin B, bread products, aspirin) prior to
going to bed/passing out face down on the kitchen floor
with a bag of popcorn, the hangover should be minimal
and in no way interfere with my daily Saturday or
Sunday (or any day for that matter) activities.

Come on now, it's only fair, you do your part, I'll do
mine.

Alcohol, I have enjoyed our friendship for some years
now and would like to ensure that we remain on good
terms. You've been the invoker of great stories, the
provocation for much laughter, and the needed
companion when we just don't know what to do with the
extra money in our pockets. In order to continue this
friendship, I ask that you carefully review my
grievances above and address them immediately.

I will look for an answer no later than Thursday 5pm
(pre-happy hour) on your possible solutions and
hopefully we can continue this fruitful partnership.

Thank you,
Your biggest fan.

PS - I 'gave up' alcohol for Lent, thanks for reminding me Tom!

Quote of the Day
With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person which almost went unnoticed last week. Larry La Prise, the man who wrote "The Hokey Pokey," died peacefully at age 93. The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in, and then the trouble started.

Ground Hog Day Ground Hog Day

Quick Thoughts
* Ground Hog Day, in fact - even the thought of it, is pretty inane. And FWIW, we have "6 more weeks of winter" coming. Shocker; given that it is all of 20 degrees outside now.
* More importantly - the State of the Union is tonight (in 30 minutes)!
* Although it pains me to give Clinton any credit for anything, aside from gratuitously abusing the office we (not me) elected him to, as a fiscal conservative I have to give a shout-out because 6 years ago (1998) he submitted a balanced federal budget for the first time in the US in 29 years. Not saying it was a good budget, but atleast it was balanced :).
