... more here, from Michael Graham himself
... 'Islam guilty as charged? Not exactly' ...
Ever since the attacks of September 11, 2001 Americans across the political spectrum have been seeking to “understand” terrorism. ... We are a nation of problem solvers, tinkerers, do-it-yourselfers; we’re good at taking things apart to get at the nub of a problem be it a faulty condenser or where to build a railroad. ... What we’re not so good at is “understanding” the motivations underlying human behavior for which most of the evils of this world both past and present can be ascribed. In truth, understanding the nature of evil has not been one of our strong suits. ... What CAIR or any other so-called “moderate” Islamic group cannot do is to refute Mr. Graham’s thesis point by point. To recognize that there is even a discussion about whether Islam itself is the problem would open the door to introspection. And at the present time, this is something that Islamic culture simply is incapable of doing.

  • Islamofascism :
  • Al-Takeyya : The Islamic principle of lying for the sake of Allah. Falsehoods told to prevent denigration of Islam, to protect oneself, or to promote the cause of Islam are sanctioned by the Quran, including lying under penalty of perjury in testimony before the United States Congress, lying or making distorted statements to the media such as claiming that Islam is a religion of peace, and deceiving fellow Muslims when the one lying has deemed them to be apostates. See the Islam Review article for documentation of this from the Quran and the Hadith. The practice of Al-Takeyya is commonly employed to declare a Hudna.

  • Heroes :
I no longer think Hollywood stars are terribly important. They are uniformly pleasant, friendly people, and they treat me better than I deserve to be treated. But a man or woman who makes a huge wage for memorizing lines and reciting them in front of a camera is no longer my idea of a shining star we should all look up to.

How can a man or woman who makes an eight-figure wage and lives in insane luxury really be a star in today's world, if by a "star" we mean someone bright and powerful and attractive as a role model? Real stars are not riding around in the backs of limousines or in Porsches or getting trained in yoga or Pilates and eating only raw fruit while they have Vietnamese girls do their nails.

They can be interesting, nice people, but they are not heroes to me any longer. A real star is the soldier of the 4th Infantry Division who poked his head into a hole on a farm near Tikrit, Iraq. He could have been met by a bomb or a hail of AK-47 bullets. Instead, he faced an abject Saddam Hussein and the gratitude of all of the decent people of the world.

  • Letter to alcohol:
  • Dear Alcohol:
First & foremost, let me tell you that I'm a huge fan of yours. My friend, you always seem to be there when needed. The perfect post-work cocktail, a beer at the game, and you're even around during the holidays hidden inside chocolates as you warm us when we're stuck in the midst of endless family gatherings. However, lately I've been wondering about your intentions. While I want to believe that you have my best interests at heart, I feel that your influence has led to some unwise consequences:

    1. Phone calls: While I agree with you that communication is important, I question the suggestion that any conversation of substance or necessity take place after 2 a.m. Why would you make me call those ex-boyfriends/girlfriends when I know for a fact they do not want to hear from me during the day, let alone all hours of the night?
    2. Eating: Now, you know I love a good meal, but why do you suggest that I eat a taco with chili sauce, along with a big Italian meatball sandwich and some stale chips (washed down with WINE & topped off with a Kit Kat after a few cheese curls & chili cheese fries)? I'm an eclectic eater, but I think you went too far this time.
    3. Clumsiness: Unless you're subtly trying to tell me that I need to do more yoga to improve my balance, I see NO need to hammer the issue home by causing me to fall down. It's completely unnecessary, and the black & blue marks that appear on my body mysteriously the next day are beyond me. Similarly, it should never take me more than 45 seconds to get the front door key into the lock.
    4. Furthermore: The hangovers have GOT to stop. This is getting ridiculous. I know a little penance for our previous evening's debauchery may be in order, but the 3 p.m. hangover immobility is completely unacceptable! My entire day is shot. I ask that, if the proper precautions are taken (water, vitamin B, bread products, aspirin) prior to going to sleep/passing out face down on the kitchen floor with a bag of popcorn, the hangover should be minimal & in no way interfere with my daily activities.

Alcohol, I have enjoyed our friendship for some years now & would like to ensure that we remain on good terms. You've been the invoker of great stories, the provocation for much laughter, and the needed companion when I just don't know what to do with the extra money in my pockets.
In order to continue this friendship, I ask that you carefully review my grievances above & address them immediately. I will look for an answer no later than Friday 8:30 p.m. (pre-karaoke) on your possible solutions & hopefully we can continue this fruitful partnership.
    Thank you,
    Your biggest fan

DeLay Wants Enforcement Before Any Guestworker Bill
Call His Office and Thank Him

Your calls are needed to reinforce House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's (R-TX) position that immigration enforcement must come before any guestworker bill.

Just days after Senators Cornyn and Kyl unveiled their bill tying the promise of strong enforcement provisions with an unlimited guestworker program DeLay announced that the House will pass enforcement legislation before considering any guestworker bill. During his comments, DeLay said more security measures are needed and the government has to prove it will enforce the law before voters will accept a new guestworker program.

Yesterday, President Bush told House Republicans at a closed-door meeting that he wants them to pass a guestworker bill this fall. The president also said he wants MORE legal immigration.

It is critically important that we fortify DeLay's commitment to put enforcement first. He has resisted the president's request to expedite a guestworker bill thus far because he knows the American public will not accept more guestworkers when the government is obviously failing to enforce immigration laws or secure the borders.

Please make a quick phone call to any of Leader DeLay's offices listed below and thank him for holding the line. Tell his office that American voters expect Congress to first eat its spinach by passing a tough enforcement bill and funding its implementation before even considering the special interest desert of an unlimited guestworker program.

Letter from Kilgore Letter from Kilgore

    To: Kilgore for Governor Leadership

    From: Ken Hutcheson
Campaign Manager, Virginians for Jerry Kilgore

Re: New Poll Results / What to Expect Next

On behalf of Jerry and Marty Kilgore and the entire Kilgore for Governor Campaign staff, please allow me say thank you to all of you for the contribution of your time and resources to our important cause. Because of your tireless support, we are winning this campaign and demonstrating to all Virginians that Jerry Kilgore has the experience to lead as our next Governor.

As you know, President George W. Bush campaigned for Jerry last week in McLean, VA. We thought you might like to see what he had to say about Jerry, so we produced a short video clip of his remarks for you to review by visiting this link.

You may have seen over the weekend that a poll conducted by Mason-Dixon showed the Kilgore/Kaine race in a dead heat. This poll flies in the face of everything we have seen -- eight other public polls and our own internal polling -- that show Jerry Kilgore with a clear lead in this race. Everything we see places the momentum squarely on our side. Jerry Kilgore won the first debate, dominated the last fund-raising period and just welcomed President Bush to Virginia. Tim Kaine, meanwhile, lost the first debate, raised only half of what Kilgore raised in June and has completely abandoned rural Virginia. Kaine has even brought in the assistance of liberal heroes John Kerry and Tom Daschle to rally his apathetic base. There is simply no evidence to support the results of this poll.

Other public polls for this race are listed below:
    Date Name Results
July 12, 2005 Rasmussen Poll Kilgore 47% to Kaine 41% to Other 4%
June 30, 2005 Survey USA Poll Kilgore 49% to Kaine 39% to Potts 5%
June 2005 Rasmussen Poll Kilgore 46% to Kaine 40%
May 2005 Survey USA Poll Kilgore 44% to Kaine 40%
April 2005 Rasmussen Poll Kilgore 44% to Kaine 36%
March 2005 Survey USA Poll Kilgore 46% to Kaine 36%
October 2004 Richmond Times-Dispatch Poll Kilgore 34% to Kaine 25%
    October 2004 Mason-Dixon Poll Kilgore 40% to Kaine 35%

While these numbers bode well, we cannot let up on our efforts - there is still much work to do and we must continue to run as if we were 10 points down. As we all know, the only poll that truly matters is the one on November 8th. We have the momentum and the right message, but we need you to remain focused and energized for the next 105 days.

We can expect the often hysterical and negative rhetoric of the Kaine campaign to only degrade further into the gutter. The negative attack mailings from the Kaine campaign are filling up mailboxes across the Commonwealth, and their rhetoric continues to sound more and more desperate having lost the most recent debate and fundraising report by a 2 to 1 margin. It is safe to say our opponent and his liberal out of state allies like Move-On.Org, John Kerry and Howard Dean will be working hard in the coming weeks to stop our momentum and to redouble their bitter attacks on Jerry Kilgore

We need you to share this information with your friends and family and encourage them to get involved in the campaign, even if it means just signing up to display a Kilgore yard sign or put a bumper sticker on their car. Encourage them to sign up to volunteer and be a part of this grassroots driven campaign-we need everyone joining in this important cause for our families and for our future. For more information on how to get involved, please visit www.JerryKilgore.com.

With individuals of your great character and dedication leading the way, we will be victorious in November and be ready to enact Honest Reform in Virginia.

Last but not least, below is a link to an interesting analysis of the campaign by Jeff Schapiro from Sunday's Richmond Times Dispatch that you might find interesting: Schapiro Article

  • I pledge allegiance, to Ted Nugent:
“A Ted Nugent campaign (for Michigan governor) would certainly be a treat for voters if his extravagant rock shows are any guide to how he would conduct his rallies. At his concert Monday night in Waco, Texas, he instructed U.S. military personnel in the audience to challenge anyone who didn’t say the Pledge of Allegiance. ‘If they ain’t saying anything, just go ahead and knock ‘em down. You may resuscitate them immediately,’ Mr. Nugent told a laughing crowd.”

  • The Battered-Left Syndrome - a poem:
  • Much like a victim of spousal abuse,
The Left always seems to have an excuse
For barbarous behavior by terrorist thugs,
Their violence dismissed with self-blaming shrugs.
Oh, they just can’t help it, they just get so mad,
When we get them upset by behaving so bad.
    It’s not really their fault that we suffer their blows;
We provoked them ourselves as everyone knows.

Like a cowering wife with her bruised blackened eye,
    The Liberal defeatists just keep asking why;
What is it in us our tormentors despise?
What will gain us some favor in those angry eyes?
    It must be our doing that sets them aflame;
Our own bad behavior that must bear the blame.
If we just appease them, we grovel and simper,
Perhaps we’ll avoid the mad wrath of their temper.

Battered wives learn what the Left cannot see:
Excusing brutal behavior will not set you free.
Appeasing these madmen just maddens them more,
Till someday they’ll come and kill three thousand more.
Quit making excuses for these murderous men,
You Liberal appeasers, who’d let terrorists win.
The only sure way to be free of their ire:
Defeat and destroy them; fight fire with fire.

--thanks Russ Vaughn @ American Thinker!

Letter from Natl Taxpayers' Union Letter from Natl Taxpayers' Union

Tell the Senate to Kill the Death Tax Once and for All!

After taxing you in almost every conceivable way throughout your lifetime, the taxman follows you to the grave for one final reach into your wallet. Worse, the death tax is a tax on virtue -- living frugally and accumulating wealth. It discourages saving and asset accumulation and encourages wasteful spending. It wastes the talent of able people, both those engaged in enforcing the tax and the even greater number engaged in devising arrangements to escape the tax. The death tax is unfair and immoral, but due to Senate inaction, it remains in effect. We need taxpayers to speak out now and to tell their Senators that it is high time to kill the death tax once and for all! Please speak out today!

Send a letter to the following decision maker(s)!

    Below is the sample letter:

Subject: I urge you to end the death tax once and for all

Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

I urge you to support permanent repeal of the death tax and to oppose any half-baked compromise that would keep the tax in place. Because it taxes virtue -- living frugally and accumulating wealth - the tax wastes the talent of able people, including those who enforce it and those who must find ways to legally escape it.

The death tax is one of the most unjustifiable federal taxes, since it punishes the hard work and savings of parents wishing to leave behind a better life for their children. The death tax is especially damaging to small businesses and family-owned farms, many of which are thrown into bankruptcy or insolvency when forced to pay these levies.

The main effect of this unjust tax is to create an industry for thousands of lawyers and estate planners who help the super-wealthy waste time and money avoiding it. I'm counting on your vote to end the pointless death tax once and for all.

    Sincerely,
    ______________

  • The Butterfly Effect, and what it means to all of us : I recently saw this movie (while giving blood, by the way) and while the movie was pretty decent it got me thinking ... let's skip over the whole memory-shapes-the-past / time-travel thing (i.e. - the plot) for a moment, so I can make my point. The real moral, if you will, that I "took home" from the movie was the tremendous impact each person has on their surroundings and fellow people. If you haven't seen the movie, the main character (Ashton Kutcher) has the ability to effectively go back into the past (or his memory thereof) and to thus change his present. Right. As I said, skip over all that. The key thing was that he tried out several different things to shape his present; wandering the gamut from being an amputee to a felon to a preppie-college-frat-boy ... and his ex-girlfriend (and sometime current girlfriend) ending up dead, as a crack whore or as a preppie-college-sorority-girl. Anyway, the point is this : these dramatic changes result from sometimes minor interactions.
So, in conclusion (finally?!), you should make sure you effect other peoples' lives in a positive fashion ... and don't turn them into crack whores.

Another Letter from Kerry Another Letter from Kerry

... and as amusing as the first!

This much is clear already. Judge Roberts is no Sandra Day O'Connor.

Last night we learned that President Bush wants to replace a woman who voted to uphold Roe v. Wade with a man who argued against Roe v. Wade, and that sends a clear signal that this White House remains bent on opening old wounds and dividing America.

There are big questions that must be answered involving Judge Roberts' judicial philosophy as demonstrated over his short time on the appellate court. The Senate must learn whether he has a clear, consistent commitment to upholding Constitutional standards like civil rights, the right to privacy, and Roe v. Wade. These issues are in serious question if you take even a cursory glance at his record.

We need to ask the tough questions to determine whether John Roberts is the nominee who will give America a Court that is fair, independent, ethical and committed to Constitutional freedoms rather than an ideological agenda, and I promise you I will do everything in my power to assure that no question is sidestepped.

Throughout every step of the confirmation process, I will keep you informed about the questions that need to be asked, the answers we need to demand, and the principles we need to defend. It's impossible to overstate the importance of this moment.

As the U.S. Senate discharges one of its most important responsibilities, I will be active and vigilant. I hope you will do the same, beginning right now. Start by sharing a few words about your personal feelings on the importance of this Supreme Court nomination.

So - everyone point and laugh Mssr Kerry!

Letter from CFRA Letter from CFRA

As a valued member of our online team, I wanted to give you some information regarding the President's nomination of Judge John Roberts.

Of course we expect this nomination will signal the beginning of a very difficult and trying confirmation process that will ultimately center around Robert's stance on abortion.

TJ, but even before the announcement of Sandra Day O'Connor's retirement, The Center has been center-stage on judicial vacancy issue. We have been a consistent voice, urging the President to honor his campaign pledge by nominating a person with sterling credentials, who will uphold the Constitution and defend public faith and the unborn.

Early in this process, it would appear that the President is a man of his word--that he kept his promise to us.

However, it is early in the process ...
That is why we are urging all Christians to do two very important things over these next days and weeks as the confirmation process unfolds:

    Action Item #1--Pray
As the President said in his announcement speech this is very important decision that affects all Americans. He is right. The next Supreme Court justice will be instrumental in the direction of our nation for the twenty-five years or so-- affecting our children and grandchildren.

That is why I am asking everyone on our team to be in earnest prayer over Judge Roberts throughout this entire process.

I would ask that you pray specifically that the heart Judge Roberts will be revealed early in the confirmation hearings, so that people of faith can determine their level of support.

Action Item #2--Help us Rally 300,000 petitions!
TJ, my staff informs me that you haven't yet added your name to our important "Judicial Vacancy" petition. Let me just say that as this confirmation process begins, I really believe the grassroots voice of America needs to be mobilized and ready to respond to our Senators at a moment's notice!

That is why I am urging friends like you to take immediate action by adding your name to our petition and helping us reach 300,000 as soon as possible. Click here to sign!

Here at The Center, we are trusting that the President has made the right choice for our nation and our judiciary, and are relying on the Lord to reveal whether or not he is the right man to sit on the High Court.

And throughout the process, I am encouraging our team to keep the grassroots voice of America strong by adding their name to our petition

Thank you in advance for standing with us!
    Dr. Gary Cass, Executive Director

Judge John G. Roberts A Great Choice for Supreme Court Justice

ANN ARBOR, MI — The President’s nomination of Court of Appeals Judge John G. Roberts, a solid conservative, to replace the retiring Sandra Day O’Connor, is already causing great consternation among pro-abortion groups and Liberals.

Richard Thompson, President and Chief Counsel for the Thomas More Law Center, a public interest law firm located in Ann Arbor, Michigan commented, “I applaud President Bush for keeping his promise to the American people to appoint judges who will interpret the law and not act as super legislators. Judge Roberts has an impeccable legal career. If there is going to be fight over the President’s choice for Supreme Court, this is a fight worth joining.”

Those opposing the President’s nominee, point to Robert’s legal positions in briefs he co-authored as a U. S. Deputy Solicitor General to overturn Roe v. Wade and the so-called Lemon Test dealing with prayers at high school graduations.

In Rust v. Sullivan, a case dealing with a rule prohibiting federally funded family planning clinics from discussing abortion with patients, Robert’s brief argued the “we continue to believe that Roe was wrongly decided and should be overruled.”

In Lee v. Weisman, a case dealing with the constitutionality of prayers at high school graduations, Robert’s brief urged the court to rule that such prayers were constitutional and did not involve any coercion.

Roberts, 50, graduated from Harvard Law School in 1979 and clerked for Judge Henry J. Friendly of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. The following year he clerked for Justice William Rehnquist. Following his clerkship experience, Roberts served as Special Assistant to United States Attorney General William French Smith. In 1982 President Reagan appointed him to the White House Staff as Associate Counsel to the President, a position in which he served until joining the DC firm of Hogan & Hartson in 1986.

Roberts left the firm in 1989 to accept appointment as Principal Deputy Solicitor General of the United States, a position in which he served until returning to the firm in 1993. He was appointed to a seat on the Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit in May 2003.

Roberts is a practicing Catholic, married with two children.

  • Call Them What They Are: Those who murder Iraqi civilians are terrorists
  • Two words not uncommon to editorial pages are "resolve" and "sacrifice," especially as they relate to war.
  • Today, this editorial board resolves to sacrifice another word –
"insurgent" – on the altar of precise language. No longer will we refer to
suicide bombers or anyone else in Iraq who targets and kills children and other innocent civilians as "insurgents."
  • The notion that these murderers in any way are nobly rising up against a
sitting government in a principled fight for freedom has become, on its face,
absurd. If they ever held a moral high ground, they sacrificed it weeks ago,
when they turned their focus from U.S. troops to Iraqi men, women and now
children going about their daily lives.
  • They drove that point home with chilling clarity Wednesday in a poor Shiite neighborhood. As children crowded around U.S. soldiers handing out candy and
toys in a gesture of good will, a bomb-laden SUV rolled up and exploded.
  • These children were not collateral damage. They were targets.
  • The SUV driver was no insurgent. He was a terrorist.
  • People who set off bombs on London trains are not insurgents. We would
never think of calling them anything other than what they are – terrorists.
  • Train bombers in Madrid? Terrorists.
  • Chechen rebels who take over a Russian school and execute children? Terrorists.
  • Teenagers who strap bombs to their chests and detonate them in an
    Israeli cafe? Terrorists.
  • IRA killers? Basque separatist killers? Hotel bombers in Bali? Terrorists all.
  • Words have meanings. Whether too timid, sensitive or "open-minded," we've resisted drawing a direct line between homicidal bombers everywhere else in
the world and the ones who blow up Iraqi civilians or behead aid workers.
  • No more. To call them "insurgents" insults every legitimate insurgency
in modern history. They are terrorists.

Now THIS is funny ... trying, desperately, to keep Nadagate alive ...
    Dear TJ,
How many more times will Karl Rove make President Bush eat his words and shred his credibility before Karl Rove does the honorable thing and leaves the White House?

Yesterday the President furiously backpedaled from his promise to fire anyone involved in leaking the identity of a covert CIA agent to the press. Now that it's known that Rove and Vice President Cheney's Chief of Staff Lewis Libby were involved, the President has lowered the bar and now says he'll only fire someone who is convicted of a crime.

President Bush is setting a terrible standard of leadership in the White House by protecting insubordinate aides who refused to come forward when the President demanded to know who in his administration leaked Valerie Plame's identity -- and he's sending a disturbing message about our national security.

The President should not wait to find out whether Rove is convicted in the end for his leak. Either Rove lied to the President about this matter of national security, which means he should be fired immediately, or the President is not being straight with the American people about his own involvement in this case.

With all the dissembling coming out of the White House, it's clear that the only way the American people can get to the bottom of this is through full Congressional hearings. I will call for hearings this week -- and you can strengthen this call by adding your name to our petition today:

With both the House and Senate in Republican hands it will be difficult to force Congressional hearings on the Bush White House. Having as many statements as possible from people in every state will help my colleagues and me show that this is what America wants. According to a poll released yesterday by ABC News, 75% of Americans believe that Karl Rove should be fired if he leaked classified information.

More than 300,000 people have signed on so far -- help us double our numbers by forwarding this email to your friends asking them to sign:
... SO - I wonder how many of those were signatures like mine, saying that the petition is misguided and that he has yet to sign his 180?

A letter from Kilgore A letter from Kilgore

As you know, Jerry Kilgore debated Tim Kaine this past weekend before the annual Virginia Bar Association summer conference. Jerry was the clear and decisive winner in the debate on Saturday and displayed his positive vision and successfully pointed out time after time inconsistencies in Tim Kaine's stances on numerous public policy issues.

Below are some clips from various newspapers and political pundits across Virginia that you might find interesting:

Larry J. Sabato, director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics, said that Kilgore won Saturday's debate by being more assertive than Kaine..."In my view, Kilgore did the best he had ever done" by pushing differences with Kaine on guns, gay rights and taxes, Sabato said. "He was very aggressive. He was articulate. He pushed Kaine into certain liberal boxes, corners, that are tough to get out of in Virginia for a Democrat."
    Charlottesville Daily Progress 7/17/05

Robert E. Denton Jr., director of Virginia Tech's Center for Leadership Development, also gave the edge on style to Kilgore for being "much more aggressive. He put Kaine on the defensive [and] basically had Kaine responding, especially on all the follow-ups."
    Charlottesville Daily Progress 7/17/05

He did very well....he came in very strong, he was very aggressive, much more so than people thought and actually put tim Kaine a little bit on the defensive...The tone was set by Jerry Kilgore being much more aggressive and forced Tim Kaine to respond to him in several ways.
Dr. Bob Denton Post Debate Interview on WSLS 7/17/05

But Saturday, it was Kilgore who was more aggressive, lashing out at Kaine's record in his opening statement and repeatedly using his answers to criticize the Democrat's record.
    Washington Post 7/17/05

"Kilgore [tried] to position Kaine in that liberal corner on taxes, on guns and on gay rights," said Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia. "When you put those three together, it's tough for a Democrat. Kaine has to find a way out of that box."
    Washington Post 7/17/05

Yesterday, at their first official debate, Mr. Kilgore, the former attorney general, struck back. Well prepared, at ease with numbing, often sterile repetition ("I trust the people -- always have, always will") and determined to take the offensive from his opening remarks, Mr. Kilgore smacked Mr. Kaine for taking positions that seem to straddle the death penalty, taxes and guns, among other issues...But the mismatch that Democrats had hoped for, and Republicans had feared, did not materialize. Call it a draw, with the psychological edge to Mr. Kilgore.
    Washington Post Editorial 7/17/05

Kilgore, a Republican and a former attorney general, showed an aggressiveness absent in earlier encounters. He depicted Kaine, a Democrat and the state's lieutenant governor, as open to higher taxes.
    Richmond Times Dispatch 7/17/05

Yesterday, Kilgore was occasionally peppery as he portrayed Kaine as an unreliable flip-flopper.
    Richmond Times Dispatch 7/17/05

The candidates seemed better matched this time because of Kilgore's aggression, said Robert Denton, a specialist in political advertising at Virginia Tech. Kaine and Kilgore next meet in September before the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce.
    Richmond Times Dispatch 7/17/05

Debate moderator Robert D. Holsworth, a political scientist at Virginia Commonwealth University, said Kaine faced a greater challenge yesterday than Kilgore. Kaine must blur distinctions with his rival to appeal to Virginia's Republican-leaning voters, Holsworth said.
    Richmond Times Dispatch 7/17/05

In the Orwellian inversion that dominates "world opinion" and requires us to prove we're the good guys, he was interrogated and -- after convincing our guys that he really wasn't a terrorist fanatic -- released and repatriated to Afghanistan.
